Prospect Lost Their Job

What’s seems to be the best approach for prospects who can't afford to invest right now, such as after being laid off?

Be very gentle with people who are unemployed because for many it is a low point in their lives. Pay kind attention at a time when the world is kicking them down, and they will remember you forever.

  1. If they can't afford to invest right now, get them onto your newsletter.

  2. Call them on the phone every 2-3 months to make sure they are reading the newsletter, and ask what questions they have.

  3. Connect with them on LinkedIn. Ask them if there is a way you can use your network to help them find the position they seek. Ask them if you can create a posting to your network (without using their name) asking if anyone is looking for someone with their skill set.

  4. Email them a few quick tips about the few things they should do after getting laid off (rollover 401k, analyze life insurance needs if you lost company policy, analyze severance, stock options vesting, etc.)

In general, it's a brilliant tactic to pay attention to the people the rest of the industry ignores - unemployed, starting a company, no liquidity, etc.

Not everyone will come back to you once they start packing the cash, but some will.
