First go through the traditional Q&A of "Why do you say that?" and try to determine the true reason for this statement. Often times is stems from a misunderstanding of mutual funds.

If you have exhausted this line of questioning, and/or your prospect's response is something like "Mutual Funds are for average people, and they're too diversified, you can make more money elsewhere blah, blah, blah." Then, try this...

I understand Prospect. However, there are mutual funds, and there are MUTUAL FUNDS. Let me give you an example of one of my favorite mutual funds. It is managed by American Funds which is the most unique investment company in the industry, however, many people aren't very familiar with them because they don't advertise and you can only get them through an advisor. Their flagship fund is called the Investment Company of Ameerica, and here are a few stats:

-It's been around since 1934, 87 years. -It's cost is a super-low: 0.57%. -It's paid a dividend every year since 1936. -It's never had three consequtive down years. And only three times since 1934 has it had back-to-back negative years. -It's never lost money in any 7-year period or longer. -Average net return: 12.06%.
